About us
This is an academic research project looking at the way MPs and peers vote. It will be (or at least aims to be) useful for journalists, politicians, lobbyists, and members of the public interested in parliamentary behaviour.
We're interested in all votes, whipped and unwhipped and all parties. Our main interest - as the majority party in the Commons - is on Labour, but we're also interested in looking at the Conservatives and Lib Dems, as well as the minor parties.
We publish regular briefing papers analysing key events - such as the Foundation Hospitals rebellion or the revolts over top-up fees - as well as more detailed research papers. Over the last year our research has featured in most UK newspapers (including the Telegraph, Guardian, Independent and Times) as well as being used widely on TV and Radio (including Newsnight, The World Tonight, BBC News 24 and so on).
Previously published work by members of the research team is available from here (albeit, unfortunately, only for those with the right subscriptions).
The project's research team consists of Philip Cowley and Mark Stuart of Nottingham University, along with Lord (Philip) Norton of Hull University. Most of the papers published on the site so far have been written by members of the research team, but we are keen to publish any papers written by others if they are suitable.
The project is mainly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), who have provided a research grant to study the 2001 Parliament - and to create this website. But previous research - on which we draw extensively - has been funded by Nottingham University, Hull University, and by the Leverhulme Trust. We are not affiliated to any political party and receive no money from any other sources.
This Website was designed and built by Andy Platt.
A series of FAQ about the research can be found here. If you would like to know more, feel free to contact us at info@revolts.co.uk
